Hey,
Just letting you know that after frustrations with the limited nature of this website, I've taken my blog off-site.

My Report to Church Council

I have to write these reports for Church Council. They actually give a good rap of my ministry stuff. Feel free to flick through.

Advent Conspiracy

During the Advent season, Nite Rocks explored the Advent Conspiracy. The services incorporated liturgy, prayers, multimedia and silence, and were quite engaging for those who came along. Phil seemed keen to use the framework at Morning Worship in 2009.

North Rocks Carols by Candlelight

Our 5th birthday proved to be successful, both by achieving our aims, and financially speaking. Attendance seemed up from previous years, and the entertainment seemed more suitable for the audience. I owe a massive thanks to Dave Robinson, Jorge & Susan Rebolledo, Mikey Groom, Claire Anderson & Mel French who formed the organising team, as well as the many who contributed on the day. It seems this little community event continues to connect with the families and young people of North Rocks.

NCYC

From January 3-9 I was in Melbourne for NCYC. My primary role was helping facilitate bible study sessions for 250-300 people, unpacking the political reading of Mark’s gospel. We got genuinely good feedback from many people, and our group represented a diverse range of cultures, ages and experiences.  Over the week I also helped with some chaplaincy and community leading.

NCYC 2011 is at the Gold Coast – I’d like to think we could get some young people to head up there.

Summer Camp

I went along to the UCA NSW Synod Summer Camp in the 3rd week of January. My role was to facilitate bible studies and leadership training for 12 school leavers who hope to become leaders at other camps. Was a challenging experience (we all had very different expectations), however I found the input of the weekend to be personally challenging and rewarding.

Youth Ministry

Possibly my biggest project over the past 7 months takes shape this Friday, when we re-launch our youth groups for 2009. Over that time, I’ve tried to develop a plan which seeks to connect with God, our community, children and our congregation.

The noticeable changes include combining Kids Klub & Priority One (and the introduction of a shared meal every week), personnel changes in the teams and the focus on hands-on leadership development. It also means the programs are less dependent on personalities, which allows for smoother transitions and teamwork. The process has been lengthy, frustrating, exciting and is not finished. I’m still seeking people to be involved in leadership opportunities and to volunteer to supply dinners.

Nite Rocks

Nite Rocks ran 4 successful ‘Summer Series’ services, featuring members of the congregation sharing messages each week. The shorter services were followed by a barbeque or pizza, and proved to once again be a great time of fellowship and encouragement.

The Nite Rocks Leadership team (formed in late ’08) is meeting Thursday 5th Feb to discern and plan the future of the gathering. It’s exciting to once again have people who are keen to participate in the leadership of this service.

Young Rocks

Young Rocks (Sunday School) has restarted, with a full roster of teachers for the three classes (very exciting). After speaking with several leaders, there is a growing sense that the current material (Seasons of the Spirit) is pretty ordinary. We’ve committed to using the material through to Easter, however I’m researching alternate material to be implemented in term 2. I thank all the teachers for their faithful service and patience.

In the Future

·         Once again I’ll be teaching 2 scripture classes at North Rocks Public School on Tuesday mornings.

·         North Rocks Community Church’s Youth Camp “Encounter” is running from April3-5 at Attunga Country Campsite. Rob Hanks, the Synod Youth Worker, will be speaking and preparing small group material.

·         I’ve joined a committee exploring youth & children’s ministry in the Parramatta-Nepean Presbytery (up to 6 meetings/year), facilitated by the Presbytery Children, Youth & Families Worker.

·         Mel & I will be attending the Hunter Presbytery Easter Camp (Mel as a pastoral carer, myself as the speaker) and then taking 1 week of holiday immediately after.

Summer Camp, Decking steps, and all that
So I went away to the NSW Synod Summer Camp for a week. This week, partnered with Winter Camp, are hopefulyl now regular highlights of my year. I drop down to Mittagong with 50(ish) kids and leaders from round the state and hang out. James Hughes (wacko from Weipa) challenged us about reconciliation, and I got to play in the worship band (all the popular people are in a band somewhere).

I cam home and, together with my father-in-law, built some steps out the back of our place. The weather was 42 degrees at Homebush, and I reckon the concrete added an extra 5 degrees. So apart from losing 3 kilos through sweat, I did something quite handy.

I made this video a while ago - check it out at http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=zG3ETrmZJJ0 - I used the resouces from www.buynothingchristmas.org, and used some free YouTube music for the backing. It's nice.

Oh, and Rob Hanks has blogged my efforts from NCYC on his blog. You should check it out - http://tinyurl.com/bzmc6v. Rob chucks some good stuff there too. And I'm considering shifting this blog to a blogger-hosted site (means I too can include videos & pictures much easier).
Going the Gold Class - Seven Pounds
At risk of over-doing this whole blog thing, I'm going to post on consecutive days.

Last night Mel & I went to Gold Class (thanks Swains) to watch Will Smith's new film, Seven Pounds. With the usual highlight of the double sundae booked in, we witnessed a film which I've found hard to describe. A jumpy beginning, a lull in the middle, yet woven together with heart-string-tugging drama and a challenging honesty.
Smith was a stand-out (dominated, but not in a Costner/Postman way). Would've enjoyed a greater role played by Woody Harrelson's character, and a nice cameo by Barry Pepper of Green Mile fame.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Allow yourself to travel the journey with the story, and take a hankie.

2009 - The Year of the Blog
So one of my resolutions for 2009 (of which I made many with no intention of upholding them) is to try and blog regularly. I think there's something to be said for writing down my ideas, thoughts, questions, etc. I hope to also include any sermons/worship stuff I write, videos I create, or things I steal from other bloggers whom I read.

So, let's start with a recap of the past few weeks:
Advent at Nite Rocks
2008 saw Nite Rocks participate in the Advent Conspiracy, seeking to engage with the story of the incarnation and worship fully, give more, spend less and love all. I think the services went really well. We incorporated images from Zoriah on the advent themes, and prayers for the Christmas Bowl. All in all, a lof of fun.

Christmas
Mel & I enjoyed CHristmas Day in our usual way - chaos. Seeing families, friends, church, 3 meals and gift-giving leaves us exhausted, but certain that we haven't wasted a minute.

NCYC
My first NCYC, and I owe many thanks to several people who sponsored my trip. A unique experience, with several great memories (Congress-led worship, visit to Narana Creations near Geelong and chats at Cafe Praxis) and some very ordinary memories (ordination on 2nd evening, buses, Ozvalki). I was part of a team putting together alernative, multimedia, participatory bible studies, and I reckon we did pretty well. Some dude taped the sessions, so I'm hoping to chase that up to prove I worked.

So... here I am. It feels like 2008 is finally over, and with Synod Summer Camp beginning this Sunday, 2009 can begin. Blog time!
Myanmar Cyclone Disaster Relief

I have often believed in supporting those doing great work, and World Vision are already on the ground supporting the victims of the world's most recent natural disaster. Spread the word, visit their website and spread some hope.
Welcome to My Blog!
Until now I've been playing with the various other pages of the website that have been fun. Nudge, Priority One and Adjust. I thought it was time for my own blog to receive some TLC.
I hope to populate this site (my very own little piece of the Internets) with stuff that's interesting and thought-provoking. It may be my own reflections & brain-dumping, maybe stuff I've written for messages or articles... I might shamelessly steal stuff from other websites. I hope to provide some links to other bloggers and websites which will rpovide even more stimulus.
Check back from time to time with a coffee and a Tim-Tam. I look forward to seeing you here. Until then...
