What is REVEAL?
REVEAL is a church wide survey asking people to reflect on where they are on their spiritual journey and what things are helpful in their spiritual growth. It was first run by Willow Creek Community Church in the US five years ago. The results were both surprising and insightful and was the basis for changing some of the programs and activities which Willow Creek provided to its members. Over the past 5 years around 1,200 church (totaling over 280,000 individuals) have taken the survey. REVEAL is being trialed in Australia this year and our church has been invited to be part of that process.
How did it work?
The survey was an online survey which was open to all people connected to our church from the 11th to the 26th September. It covered a variety of issues related to spiritual growth and our church’s activities. The survey was anonymous and all the results are currently being compiled by an independent team of researches based in the US who treat all information as highly confidential. A report will be produced for our church will be emailed to the Pastor.
Why was the survey only held over two weeks?
We limited the survey to two weeks because based on the REVEAL’s team experience most of those who respond do so within the first few days that they become aware of it.
Will the minister or church council see results from individuals in my congregation?
No. The congregation’s responses are collected anonymously by an independent
research organization. The report which is produced will be a collation of all the church’s reponses.
Why has our Church Council decided to run this survey?
At the end of 2009, we had some feedback from people that they would like the opportunity to reflect upon where our church was going in terms of its vision, programs and where the staff focus their time and energy. Instead of running a survey which asked questions such as, “What is good about our church” and “What is bad about our church” – we felt that the approach of the REVEAL survey which focused on what things are helpful for spiritual growth would give us much better insight into our vision and activities.
